Green means GO!

With even my grandma understanding the green movement this days, it’s easier than ever to pick up eco-friendly workout gear. If Paris Hilton can make changes to live a little greener (check out the lovely Jennifer’s post about Miss Hilton’s green choices on AwakenedAesthetic) while still being sassy, it’s nice to see I can do my part while sweating it out.

I am slowly learning to be more green, so I stumbled around some websites that were really helpful in guiding me through choosing Earth friendly apparel. Green Living Ideas was my favorite source, they pointed me to companies like Patagonia, Gaiam and GoLite as well as GreatGreenShoes, a one stop resource for shoes made of recycled rubber and vegan materials for men and women.

Made from 98% organic cotton, these Escala Pants from Patagonia would be a lovely surprise under my Christmas tree this year *hint hint*. http://www.patagonia.com/web/us/product/womens-escala-pants?p=56865-0-665

GoLite perhaps is the most impressive of the group in my book; just reading their Meaning of Lite section made me want to say, “Oh HECK yes!” They seem so on the ball in their goals to create the most eco-conscious products possible (even turning coconut shells into workout gear, what?) and continue making strides to reduce 100% of their environmental footprint. To continue the buzz, meander over to their Sustainability section and get all swoony over their pillow talk on their climate impact.  On top of all that, I am coveting their Ginger Hoody and DriMove BL-2 Longsleeve Zip *drool*.

Many of the products I came across while surfing the web seem a bit pricy, but I wouldn’t let that deter me. The main things to look for when choosing gear that makes Mother Earth happy are products made from organic or recycled materials, contain a minimal amount of synthetic fibers (like lycra) and are created by companies with sustainable business models and fair labor practices, according to Green Living Ideas. An interesting fact I picked up while checking out a pesticide-free organic cotton shirt was that regular cotton uses 1/3 of a pound of chemicals to make ONE t-shirt. Yikes!

Some businesses, like Patagonia and Nike, have gotten on the recycling bandwagon with stellar results. Patagonia utilizes a fiber-to-fiber recycling system to take full responsibility of every product they make and Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe recycling program takes your old, worn out sneakers and turns them into basketball courts, running tracks and playgrounds. Now that’s getting miles out of your tennies!

And what about those Sigg water bottles I’m seeing everywhere now? I’ve toted a Nalgene for years and my newest one came with a nice little sticker proclaiming it BPA free, which seems to be the main draw for the Sigg variety. For the price, I am sticking with my Nalgene at this point and taking my chances, but I am harboring some major Sigg envy. Either way, reusable water bottles save room in our landfills and cut down on the use of non-renewable resources like petroleum

While I oggle my wishlist, what steps have you taken to become more green in your day to day operations? One small change can have huge impacts on this planet we call home, are you passionate about anything in particular? As always, I am all ears to any products you would like to suggest!

B-b-b-but I don’t wanna…

I. Need. Some. Motivation. I have what can only be described as a “Case of the Mondays”. Waking up was a little rough this morning. Pouring myself that bowl of cereal took some extra effort. How is it already 6:30 p.m.? Where did my day go? I haven’t even gone to the gym yet!

Oh someecards.com, you know exactly how I feel!

Oh someecards.com, you know exactly how I feel!

Today’s case may be a little rougher than normal thanks to a small bout with a stomach virus over the weekend. I believe I slept somewhere between 15 and 18 hours on Saturday, downed a bunch of Vernors and survived off Saltines. I managed to kick it by Sunday in time to witness the Lions and Seahawks lose in football (I just cannot win when it comes to hometown football teams!), but my body really liked all of that sluggishness and is having a hard time kicking it into gear.

I know I am not the only one that faces this problem. I have talked with numerous friends about this very same struggle. We KNOW we should go to the gym and we really WANT to get a workout in, but something is just stopping us from lacing up those trainers. I made myself a promise that I would put my shoes on after I am done writing this. That is the first step. It worked once today when I walked my little cousin up to the park to play, will I really be able to trick my body into physical activity a second time? I think my odds are good…but I can also hear that pint of moose tracks ice cream calling me from the freezer…

Other tricks I like to use when I have the lazy bug is to use the “and then I will go the gym” method. Example: I will take my clothes out of the dryer then I will go the gym. See how simple that is? I usually have pretty decent luck with that one. I also bribe myself. Example: If you run a mile you can go out with your friends tonight. How rewarding! Who wouldn’t want to run a mile if your social life is on the line? I also lie to myself sometimes (horrible, I know), but it’s amazing what you can trick yourself into. Example: Put on your workout gear and tell yourself you are going to just walk around the block. If you do that, then awesome! More often than not, though, I find once I am up and moving I can turn that walk around a block into a nice little jog. Sneaky, but it gets the work done.

What do you do to stay motivated in sticking with your work out plans? Does having a buddy help? A set time to work out? I am curious and always looking for new ways to stay on track! For now, I am going to post this…then I am going to the gym!

A moment on your lips, forever on the hips!

Today, I would just like to pop in and drop a visual reference of what a pound of fat looks like.

1 pound of fat

I'll never look at a coffee mug the same again.

Isn’t that bananas??? Since June 3 I have dropped 17 of these bad boys. I say dropped and not lost because I feel “lost” implies that I miss something. There are no tears for those gobs of yuck, just bliss and hopes that they don’t decide to ever visit me again! If you need any inspiration to head to the gym or out for a run, go to your fridge or the nearest grocery store and look at a pound of butter (the boxes with 4 sticks). Pick it up and heft it in your hand a couple times. If you want to lose 5 pounds, pick up 5 packs. That little extra pudge doesn’t seem so innocent when you’re juggling it in the frozen food aisle at your local Piggly Wiggly!

For comparison, I’ll also add a picture of a nice shiny pound of muscle.

FatvsMuscle

Oh! I'll take that sleek red one please!

So there you have it, kiddies. You have to burn roughly 3,500 calories to lose one pound of fat. To lose one pound per week, you could focus on creating a deficit of 500 calories in your current daily diet to start. It really makes you think a bit before nomming that deep fried twinkie at the fair!

“Sometimes, in this world, you see things you don’t wanna see”

Oh, Patrick Swayze…how you made me swoon as Johnny Castle and Sam Wheat and totally creeped me out in your part in Donnie Darko. Along with many others, I was completely saddened when I heard the news that Swayze had lost his battle with cancer yesterday. Today, I dedicate Once Upon a Scale to all things Swayze, because whether he was lifting Baby in the air, putting the moves on Demi Moore or strutting his stuff as a Chippendale dancer alongside Chris Farley, the man could move!

Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey get down and dirty in 1987's Dirty Dancing.

I scoured the internet this morning to find calorie calculators to make this as scientific as possible.* My favorite are the ones offered at www.bodybuilding.com and www.livestrong.com. On the Livestrong site, it only takes a few minutes to create a free login and once you have access you can go to the Daily Plate tab and click on Fitness where you can see how many calories you burn in an hour doing hundreds of different activities. Pretty spiffy!

So, we know that Swayze could render a girl speechless with those hip gyrations, but he was also burning calories like nobodies business with each swivel. At 190 pounds I could burn about 204 calories while dancing for 30 minutes. Though I am not much of a dancer, I can sometimes be coaxed onto the floor when out with friends. I bet my awkward arm and leg movements could account for some extra burned energy, though I can’t say the same for my infamous finger pointing (a huge no-no according to my cohorts).

Swayze’s skills didn’t stop once his dancing shoes were kicked off. Who could forget that steamy pottery spinning scene in Ghost? I’m sure you’d expect me to mention that I could burn another 204 calories doing some arts and crafts with light effort for an hour (of course I’d hardly call what Moore and Swayze accomplished “light effort”…), but how about the fact that some playful kissing for 5 minutes burns 8 calories? The energy used for adding any vigorous activity goes up exponentially….

I hope the Chippendales have reunited somewhere in another world and those two are bringing down the house. Thanks for getting my heartbeat up multiple times, Patrick Swayze!

*Okay, so not so scientific. It is the internet, after-all.

Oh My God. Shoes. Let’s get some shoes.

My feet have been with me for 9, 318 days so far. They’ve suffered blisters through high school basketball and college soccer, hiked mountains in Switzerland, explored Paris and castles in England, splashed in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, dipped in all 5 Great Lakes, suffered broken toes, tackled a marathon in Alaska and ran through soft summer grass.

 DSCF2872

Why did it take me so long to realize the valuable benefits of finding a great pair of running shoes to cover these tough guys?

One fact I cannot ignore is that I am flat footed. I’ve had my fair share of ski-foot jokes throughout my life, have my own pair of orthotics (that gave me blisters) and struggled through some awesome calf/achilles injuries thanks to my lack of arches. It can be a daunting task to find a good pair of running shoes and my quest continues, but I can share what I have been learning along the way.

A quick step on a bath mat with wet feet shows proof of my flat feet!

A quick step on a bath mat with wet feet shows proof of my flat feet!

I tend to wear my running shoes until they literally die, usual cause of death being by wearing a hole through the bottom or the toe section. It seems the general rule of replacing your trainers should be every 300 to 500 miles. Whoops. There’s something I need to work on!

While 300 to 500 miles is a great place to start, you should also pay attention to the wear of your shoes and how you feel after a run. If you’re only 250 miles into that pair of shoes but are noticing some pain in your knees or shins, for example, you are probably in need of a fresh pair. A runner who averages running 4 days a week and goes a distance of 3-5 miles each time should expect to have to replace their shoes every 6 months at the latest.

The problem is, to feel your best while running,  you really need the right pair of shoes covering your tootsies. I scoffed at the higher priced shoes and snatched up New Balances from Kohls for years before I started training for the marathon and learned the beauty of a good pair of kicks. You really do get what you pay for when it comes to shoes and the quality of your runs.

To find your best fit, head to a local running store in your area. I was a fan of Running Fit in Ann Arbor, Mich. The staff there was able to check out my feet and examined the way my foot fell to determine a shoe that would do the job for me. I’ve been sporting my Mizuno Women’s Wave Alchemy 7′s for about a year and a half now and I have been pretty happy with them. (Yes, I know, I am a wee bit over that 6 month mark!)

These babies have been through a lot! Time to put them out to pasture.

These babies have been through a lot! Time to put them out to pasture.

Since I am flat footed, my research has shown that I should overpronate. Pronation is the inward roll of the foot and in particular the heel and arch which occurs naturally at the heel strike as a cushioning mechanism, so an overpronated foot is one that strikes on the outside of the heel and rolls inwards excessively. This is the information that was used to suggest the Wave Alchemy’s to me.

This is all well and good until I also learned that someone who pronates will have wear on the inside ball of the foot on the bottom of their shoes. Well, my shoes wear along the outer edge, suggesting that I would have high arches. Um, not so much.

My best bet is to head into another local shoe store in my new neighborhood and see what they have to say. While I am pretty happy with my Alchemy’s, I had some issues with pain when I first purchased them. Perhaps there is a shoe out there that will finally grant my feet running bliss and minimize some of the problems I have with stiff calves and achilles. Luckily, I have no issues with doing some shopping around!

So, what kind of shoes do you wear? How did you decide on that particular pair? What are the best running shoes you have ever owned? Do you have any advice for me?

I may be a lazy blogger…

but my life has been anything but! Yesterday I went on a nice 2 mile walk pushing my cousin up and down the hills in his stroller and today I finally got signed up for bikram and made it through my first class before adventuring out with my aunt and cousin down to the beach. A pleasant walk there and back that included nothing short of a million stairs. Okay, maybe not a million, but you’d have a hard time convincing my calves of that!

All of this movement is pretty stellar, I’m finding that I am not even really craving those delicious McDonald’s McChickens with cheese (what a nomilicious 380 calories before the cheese is even added. The cheese is essential.) I did break down and have some Taco Bell with my good buddy this weekend as we both realized we hadn’t enjoyed fast food tacos in ages. Let me tell you, I may have heard angels singing when I bit into that crunchy shell.

Taco Bell

The awesome thing, though? I didn’t devour everything I ordered like normal. I enjoyed the taste of what I was craving (I know, I know…but I really DO enjoy the taste of Taco Bell, weird, right?), but after a bit I just didn’t want it so badly and pawned a taco off onto my friend’s plate. He didn’t really fight it to be honest.

The point in all this is that I think it’s pretty awesome that if you are good to your body, it will crave good things. Why ruin a sweaty, 90 minute, good for your whole body yoga workout by wolfing down a quarter pounder on the way home? My brain automatically switches to thinking about sandwiches with lots of veggies or a huge salad with an abundance of spinach. Washed down with a Diet Cherry Dr. Pepper. I never said I was perfect.

Also, if you haven’t heard, I have been invited to to join in The Demoiselles Get Healthy project! What better motivation than girls all over the world tracking their progress as they try to lead healthier lifestyles? I am so honored to be involved!

Some like it hot!

Man, do I feel old. I know, I know…I am only 25, but these creaks, pops and general rickety noises my body makes every morning are disturbing. I was not born with the gift of flexibility. I failed year after year on the Presidential Fitness Test simply because I could never touch my toes. I curse you sit and reach! In 7th grade I finally learned proper-ish stretching while running track for my junior high and wanted to throw a party the first time my pointer fingers barely grazed my straining toes.

This lack of flexibility combined with my extreme love of all sports has left me stiff as a corpse after sitting for long periods or after a good nights sleep. The lower portion of my legs refuse to loosen up without extreme warm ups, my ankles click like popcorn kernals in a microwave and bending at the waist is almost a joke. When I was training for the marathon I ran in the summer of 2008, I knew I had to do something about my flexibility just to make sure my body survived the ordeal and I didn’t injure myself further.

I started doing Bikram Yoga in Ann Arbor, Mich. after reading about the health benefits of yoga and it seriously worked like magic. The room is heated up to about 105 degrees Fahrenheit  and the humidity amped up to 40 percent. I scored a sweet new student deal and got 10 consecutive days of classes for $20, a steal compared to the usual membership costs. A $10 yoga mat, old towel and large bottle of water were the only other materials required to be in the 90 minute class.

I had tried basic yoga while in college and wasn’t a huge fan. It was taking me ages to see any sort of results or substantial changes in my flexibility. While there are many different forms of yoga, with Bikram yoga I went from not being able to touch my toes the first session to bending completely in half by day 3! Bikram yoga takes you through 26 postures over the course of 90 minutes. You begin with a warming up breathing exercise before working your way through 24 asanas (or postures) on both the floor and while standing and then finish up with a breathing posture. By the time you’re done you have put your entire body through the gauntlet.

Bikram yoga may be one of the most physically and mentally challenging activities I have ever done. It can be daunting just to stay in the heated room for the full hour and a half, but it’s totally cool if you need to take a break from some of the poses and just lay back in Savasana (corpse pose) which slows your heart rate, reduces blood pressure, teaches complete relaxation and focuses the mind. It’s an awesome way to center yourself and gain mental strength to finish the class.

The heat helps to flush the toxins from your body and allows your muscles to warm up for greater flexibility and a deeper stretch. You’ll burn calories, gain endurance and can even improve the efficiency of your immune system. After 3 or 4 days of classes I was able to go through all of the asanas in the class and just worked on perfecting my form and getting further into the poses. The quality of my marathon training increased and I avoided the stiffness that often followed a long weekend run.

I mentioned previously my excitement for snowboarding season and this weekend got me thinking about how I need to start preparing my body so I can enjoy the slopes from the get go. I am pretty stoked to have found a bikram yoga center near where I am staying! I hope to start this week!

Have you ever tried yoga? I am curious to learn about the other forms if anyone has any tips, insight or advice!

Like rafting around in a dream

I’ve been spending the weekend in Whistler up in British Columbia and while the rainy weather this weekend isn’t ideal, I am still having an awesome time. When we arrived on Friday evening we took the gondola up to the top and rode the new Peak to Peak Gondola. Spectacular views! We also had the chance to do a mini little hike while up on the peak, I really need to get my calves in shape!

Me checking out the views from Whistler.

Being up here has me completely stoked for snowboarding season. I am determined to get some lunge and quad workouts in before the snow starts falling so I am ready to tackle the hills from the get-go, but more on that in a later post!

For Saturday’s adventure I traveled around 3 hours with my uncle to try my hand at some river rafting on the Thompson River and also got some much better weather conditions. Awesome. Absolutely awesome! My uncle is a guide for Bewet so I was the lucky duck who got to tag along. While I had been apprehensive all week thinking about the trip, it ended up being something I completely enjoyed and I can’t wait to go again.

Drying out the boats at the end of our run where the Thompson River meets up with the Fraser River.

In my boat were my uncle and 3 guide trainees and we got to hit some pretty big stuff so they could test their guiding skills out. Well, it was big to me, I don’t really know how it compares to any other kind of river. We’ll just say it was big enough for my first time (that’s what she said?). Anyway, rafting is a great way to get out in the water ad work the lats, rhomboids, biceps, abdominals, obliques and forearms. Needless to say, I was pretty beat after the 15 mile ride! (I think it was about 15 miles, that was the guess in our boat anyway).

I have to run now, we’re going for a hike!

She’ll be coming ’round the mountain…

Things are off to a very good start out here in the Pacific Northwest! There are so many opportunities to get outside and move around and lots of healthy, delicious food options. Since I began, I am down 7 pounds which I am pretty stoked about considering I haven’t changed many of my habits other than less fast food and more movement.

My biggest enjoyment so far has been hiking. My aunt and uncle love to get out and explore new trails and I am more than eager to tag along on the adventures. This month has offered plenty of lovely weather to get out and climb a mountain and it’s fun to take advantage of it before the rainy season starts.

When I was here at the beginning of August for a visit, my aunt and I trekked to Snow Lake in the Snoqualmie Pass. I haven’t hiked up a mountain side since I was visiting them in Switzerland in 2002, but it felt awesome to be out there. Later that week, my aunt, uncle and 10 month old cousin traveled 2 hours to explore the Icicle Gorge Loop Trail which wound through the forest near a beautiful river.

Those were some great warm up trails as this past Sunday we headed 3 hours north to tackle the Table Mountain Trail in the North Cascades which overlook Mount Baker.

Me at the top of Table Mountain with Mount Baker in the distance.

What a workout! It was definitely the steepest mountain side I have climbed to date, the switchbacks were intense and had me coveting my own pair of trekking poles (my aunt was very kind to let me borrow hers for the day).

As a huge fan of cross training, hiking is a gorgeous way to enjoy the surrounding areas while burning calories and building up muscle. I am looking forward to investing in a good pair of hiking boots eventually and navigating my way around more of the mountains and trails near here.

A two hour hike is much more enjoyable to me than the 1.5 mile run I accomplished yesterday. Seattle is a very hilly place and I had to allow myself to walk up the hills and run on the flat and downhill parts, but at least I have goals to eventually be able to run the whole thing. In the meantime, I don’t mind working on my stamina where I can enjoy breathtaking views!

So, I moved to Seattle…

This blog kind of died when I no longer had internet and decided to move across the country, but as of last Thursday I now live in Seattle! With all of these hills to walk up and mountains to climb I am really excited about what this means for my levels of fitness! So don’t fret, I will be back in action starting today!
